If a swarm of 10,000 bees suddenly shows up near your home, don’t freak out. They’re just searching for a new, safe place to settle down. When these bees cluster together, they’re homeless, usually due to an overpopulation in their old hive. The queen and up to 15,000 worker bees make the decision to pack up and find a new home, not really knowing where that home is. Sadly, only 20 percent of bee colonies that try to find a new home survive. Factors like predators, pesticides and limited protection from the weather take their toll. Losing colonies via swarms contributes to population decline, adding urgency to the need to respond quickly when a swarm is located. Bees play a very important role in the ecosystem, pollinate beautiful flowers, crops, and make delicious honey, so let’s help them out.
