Douglas Mader, DVM performed a routine dental procedure on two indoor Himalayan cats, who previously had a clean bill of health according to a routine checkup. The two cats’ blood was tested, and found the presence of toxic black mold. Both cats passed away shortly after the discovery. The home the two cats lived in was previously affected by flooding from a hurricane. After testing for mold, the home tested positive for severe mold contamination in the walls.
How Do You Know Your Pet Has Been Affected By Mold?
Pet mold poisoning falls into three categories:
- Inhalation
- Allergic Reactions
- Ingestion
Respiratory symptoms that may indicate mold inhalation include:
- Respiratory distress
- Coughing
- Nasal discharge
- Sneezing
- Wheezing
- Lethargy
- Bleeding from the mouth and/or nose
Allergic reaction symptoms to mold exposure include:
- Excessive scratching, licking, and chewing
- Fur loss and development of sores
Mold ingestion may lead to gastric symptoms including:
- Decreased appetite
- Stool changes
- Vomiting
