Bugs make the worst roommates EVER!
So you don’t own a house? Renting an apartment instead? I bet you thought pests would never come knocking! The landlord’s got it handled, right? Not necessarily!
Sanitation habits play an important role in preventing and eliminating pests. Insects and rodents need food, water and shelter to survive and by eliminating these resources, you will be able to avoid most infestations. In many cases, pest infestations can be spotted very early or prevented all together if sanitation conditions are good.
Rules for a pest free apartment:
- Keep the kitchen as clean as possible
- Wash and put away dishes after every use
- Wipe down counter tops to get rid of any crumbs
- Rinse and dry sinks every night to eliminate water sources
- Empty toaster crumb trays
- Wipe down all appliances
- Thoroughly sweep the floor to get rid of crumbs
- Mop at least once a week to get rid of spills and food particles
- Either use a trash can with a very tight fitting lid or take out trash every night
- Get rid of clutter (Unnecessary clutter provides shelter for pests.)
- Throw away cardboard boxes
- Eliminate any unneeded papers
- Don’t put anything under your bed or sofa unless it is in a secure container
- Fix leaky faucets (Oh landlord!)
- Check for “sweating pipes”
- Check seals around doors and windows for moisture
By following these simple rules, most pests will avoid your home and seek out a more hospitable environment! If your landlord will not respond to your pest problem, the best thing to do is contact a pest control professional yourself and get advice for how to proceed from them!
